In 2021, the volunteers of the Via Coriovallum Foundation suggested the plan to have the old heir tracks, over which pilgrims used to go, walked by pilgrims again. The Via Coriovallum has been developed for this purpose. Heerlen is thus connected to the European network of Pilgrim Roads to Santiago de Compostela and Rome. The Via Coriovallum has also become a practice circuit for hikers who want to gain pilgrim experience.

The Via Coriovallum is unique in many ways, both because of the route and the history of the area. Parts of this walk follow the "Via Belgica", an important part of a large and complex network of Roman roads.

Along the roads, small villages arose that grew into larger settlements such as Coriovallum, today's Heerlen. The route goes through beautiful South Limburg with its hills and valleys, a very varied landscape. You walk on various types of roads, on paths, through sand, loess and sometimes mud. And it is a real pilgrimage.

You can also, with your pilgrim passport, spend the night in a real pilgrim hostel and in a monastery. The total length of the route is 90 kilometers and can easily be divided into shorter routes. If you think 10 km is enough, stop it and continue next time.
