Der Zeustempel von Olympia war der dominierende Bau im olympischen Heiligtum und wurde in den Jahren von etwa 480/470 bis 456 v. Chr. errichtet. Der etwa 64 Meter lange, 28 Meter breite und 20 Meter hohe Tempel zählt zu den bedeutendsten Bauwerken der frühklassischen Architektur. Er war der größte Tempel auf der Peloponnes und zur Zeit seiner Errichtung der größte Tempel des griechischen Mutterlandes überhaupt. Am fünften Tag der Olympischen Spiele zogen alle Athleten und Zuschauer in feierlicher Prozession dorthin, um auf dem religiösen Höhepunkt der Spiele am nördlich des Tempels gelegenen Brandaltar des Zeus Rinder zu opfern, die anschließend in einem gemeinsamen Festschmaus verspeist wurden.
