Aosta ist die Hauptstadt der Region Aostatal in den italienischen Alpen. Die Stadt hat 34.052 Einwohner .
Aosta liegt in der Mitte des Aostatals auf etwa 583 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel und erstreckt sich über eine Fläche von 21 Quadratkilometern. Am Südrand des Stadtgebiets fließt die Dora Baltea gegen Osten. Der Bergbach Buthier fließt von Norden her aus dem Seitental Valpelline durch das Stadtgebiet und mündet unterhalb davon in die Dora Baltea. Die westliche Stadtgrenze verläuft im Tal des Bergbachs, der von der Südostflanke der Pointe de Chaligne durch eine steile Schlucht bei Chabloz und beim Weiler Pont d’Aisod das Tal der Dora Baltea erreicht.
