Das Val di Sole liegt nordwestlich von Trient in den italienischen Alpen. Es bildet mit dem Nonstal ein dem Etschtal zulaufendes Talsystem. Das Tal gehört administrativ zur Talgemeinschaft Comunità della Valle di Sole der Autonomen Provinz Trient.
Die italienische Bezeichnung Val di Sole hat mit der Sonne wahrscheinlich nichts zu tun. Da es in Nordtirol gleich klingende Namen wie Sulztal, Sulzkogel usw. gibt, könnte an eine gemeinsame keltische Wurzel gedacht werden, aus der sich das italienische sole und das deutsche Sulz entwickelt haben. Durchaus nicht zu weit hergeholt könnte ein Thuls sein, das mit dem Stamm der Tuliassi aus der Tabula Clesiana in Verbindung gebracht werden könnte. Ähnlich spekulativ ist die Herleitung von der keltischen Wassergottheit Sulis, die eine Verbindung mit den Mineralwasserquellen im Val di Sole herstellen wollen.
