Ein großer Teil der mittelalterlichen Stadtmauern und Tore ist erhalten geblieben. Von den einst 4 bestehenden Stadttoren sind 3 erhalten, nämlich Porta al Sole, Porta Alberti und Porta del Rivellino. Porta al Sole ist das Haupttor und öffnet sich nach Süden, daher die Referenz al Sole. An der Spitze befindet sich ein Wappen der Familie Medici.
