"King of France and Navarre..." It was only a small area of the former kingdom of Navarre that enabled Henri III, son of Queen Jeanne d'Albret, to proclaim himself King of Navarre, before being called to the French court to become the famous Henri IV. Navarre, today known as Basse-Navarre, was part of a larger kingdom during the Middle Ages, then a kingdom in its own right during the Modern Era, before the Kingdom of France and the Revolution dissolved its last institutions. What were the processes behind this transformation? Who were the people who brought this area to life and shaped this landscape? To visit the Mehaka center is to understand the little-known history of this part of the kingdom, and to meet the people who lived there.
