He found them in the house of the De Groot family, which still stands in renovated form on the Gerwenseweg just outside Nuenen. Bony fingers, knobby noses, sailing ears, fleshy lips, pronounced cheekbones, heavy eyebrows and animalistic poops: there is no uglier company in the history of art that has become as famous as Vincent van Gogh's The Potato Eaters.
The painting is both unattractive and fascinating at the same time. When Van Gogh showed it, his contemporaries mainly experienced the former. Sensitivity to the latter grew in the years after his death, when the publication of his letters led to a greater understanding of his artistic programme and its development. After that, the typical nineteenth-century motif quickly became one of the icons of twentieth-century art.
