The Four Tambours

The Vier Tamboers is a Dutch war memorial in Zevenaar on the Raadhuisplein in memory of the civilian victims in the Second World War. The monument was designed by the sculptor Ubbo Scheffer and was unveiled in 1961.
The monument stands on the place where the ancestral home of the Van Nispen tot Pannerden family used to be. This is the family where the then mayor of Zevenaar comes from, jhr. Antoine van Nispen tot Pannerden. This house was destroyed by the Germans during the war. During the occupation there were civilian casualties in the municipality of Zevenaar and several places in the municipality were bombed. The civilians living in Babberich, Oud-Zevenaar and Ooy also had to evacuate in February 1945. Several buildings were destroyed by the Germans, including in the vicinity of the hospital and in the center of Zevenaar, between 12 February and 3 April 1945. Patients from the hospital and residents of the retirement home were evacuated. Zevenaar was liberated by the Canadian military on 3 April 1945.
