The Drenthepad is a long distance walk through the province of Drenthe, with a small excursion across the border! The fourth stage crosses the border into Friesland in the Drents-Friese Wold and ends in the touristic Appelscha.

The fifth stage takes you back to Drenthe. But before you get there, you will walk through a breathtakingly beautiful piece of nature: the Fochteloërveen. You leave Appelscha on the north side, where peat used to be extracted. Much of what you encounter is a reminder of this time. The Compagnonsvaart with the Turfroute, along which peat used to be transported. In the small museum of the Historical Society of Appelscha you will find all kinds of tools and images. At Ravenswoud you can see the structure of excavated peat in the landscape, from which new straight fields emerged.

After Ravenswoud you will pass the lookout tower De Zeven. From the tower you have a fantastic view over the Fochteloërveen. The Fochteloërveen has not been completely excavated. This makes it one of the last remaining raised bog areas in the Netherlands. You will also find unique vegetation here, which also attracts special residents. Perhaps the most special is the crane, which has also been raising young here in recent years.

The stage ends in Veenhuizen. This special "prison village" was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2021, as part of the Colonies of Benevolence. Be sure to also take a look at the Prison Museum. Discover the unique atmosphere in the place where a few years ago, thanks to the theater performance of "Het Pauperparadijs", poverty in the Netherlands was given a face.
