The Groningers had to defend themselves against the water in the past, but they also used the water to fend off the enemy. This area was part of a large marsh, the Bourtanger Moor. There were five passages between Coevorden and the Dollard. Fortified towns developed at these points, one of which is Bourtange. After the draining of the marsh, the defensive function was no longer relevant. The fortification walls now offer a colorful display of many wild plants in the summer.
