El Grand-Hornu fue construido entre 1810 y 1830 y conecta las infraestructuras mineras con las viviendas privadas de patrones y trabajadores.
Los 'edificios mineros' están ubicados alrededor de una plaza ovalada. Las oficinas de la dirección están conectadas con los almacenes y los talleres.
En el mismo periodo se construyeron 400 viviendas para trabajadores. Están equipadas con una sala de estar, una cocina, tres dormitorios en el primer piso, un sótano y un pequeño jardín trasero.
La ciudad también contaba con una escuela, una casa de baños, una sala de baile y una biblioteca.
El terreno fue restaurado en 1971 y alberga ahora el museo de arte contemporáneo (MAC) de la comunidad francófona (http://www.mac-s.be)
Monumento clasificado por Decreto ministerial de la Región Valona (11-03-1993)
