La torre sur lleva en la cima al famoso campanero Jan van Nijvel. Esta representación de un hombre que toca las campanas, de dos metros de altura, está hecha de latón dorado. La figura data de aproximadamente 1400 y fue trasladada en 1617 desde el antiguo ayuntamiento a este campanario.
Este autómata fue donado a la ciudad en el siglo XV por el duque Carlos el Temerario. Inicialmente se colocó en el ayuntamiento, pero en 1617 fue trasladado a la torre sur de la colegiata. Fue alrededor de ese tiempo que la población comenzó a llamarlo Jean de Nivelles, en honor a la figura francesa que aparecía en canciones populares. En el dialecto nijvelense, era conocido cariñosamente como Djan-Djan. La canción Vive Djan-Djan es el himno de la ciudad.
