En 1909 se erigió en este sitio una estatua del humanista, latinista e historiador Justus Lipsius (Overijse 1547 - Lovaina 1606), profesor de la Universidad de Lovaina desde 1592, en sustitución de una fuente de hierro fundido que se había colocado aquí desde 1890. Consta de un alto zócalo de piedra azul de estilo neoclásico, firmado "J. JOURDAIN - SCULPTEUR" y "H. VAES. V. CRETEN - ARCHITECTES" y escultura de bronce fundida por Felix Van Aerschodt (ver inscripción). El monumento fue donado a la Ciudad por el Estado belga con motivo del 75 aniversario del restablecimiento (1834-1909) de la Universidad Católica de Lovaina, véase la inscripción "JUSTO.LIPSIO/ IN.ALMA.UNIVERSITATE/ LOVANIENSI. PROFESSORI/ ADMCMIX .RESTITUAE/ UNIVERSITATIS.LXXV/ LEOPOLDO.II/ REGE. BELGARUM".
