Porta San Giovanni es la puerta más hermosa e impresionante de San Gimignano. La puerta se abre a Piazzale dei Martiri di Montemaggio, que solía ser el sitio del Monasterio de San Francisco.
La puerta daba acceso a la ciudad desde el sur y era la puerta histórica para los que venían de Siena por el tramo de Via Francigena que discurría por San Gimignano.
Completada en 1262, la puerta tiene un arco sienés, rematado por un centinela que sobresale y se apoya en el muro inferior con su serie de arquillos.
En 1601, el centinela se colocó en la puerta de la iglesia de Madonna dei Lumi, que fue demolida en 1922 para despejar el camino. Hoy sólo queda un pequeño campanario de la iglesia que se puede ver extramuros.
