Le Portrait d'Adele Bloch-Bauer I a longtemps été le point central de la Galerie autrichienne Belvedere. Mais le tableau a été confisqué par les nazis pendant la guerre au collectionneur d'art juif Bloch-Bauer. Bien qu'Adele Bloch-Bauer, dans son testament, ait demandé à son mari de faire don des peintures de Klimt à la Galerie d'État autrichienne après sa mort. Après une énorme bataille juridique aux États-Unis et en Autriche, un arbitrage contraignant par le tribunal autrichien a établi en 2006 que Maria Altmann était la légitime propriétaire de cette peinture et de quatre autres peintures de Klimt. Le tableau a été vendu à Lauder en juin 2006. La Neue Galerie de New York aurait payé 135 millions de dollars pour le cinquième portrait volé de Klimt, Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
