Varces-Allières-et-Risset est une commune française située dans le département de l'Isère en région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
Autrefois rattaché à l'ancienne province royale du Dauphiné, le village puis la commune de Varces est longtemps resté une très modeste agglomération de la vallée de la Gresse, un affluent du Drac, avant de bénéficier du rattachement de nombreux villages situés aux alentours puis d'accueillir sur son territoire au début des années 1970, un établissement pénitentiaire dénommé Maison d'arrêt de Grenoble-Varces.
