La torre meridionale ospita in cima il famoso suonatore di campane Jan van Nijvel. Questa raffigurazione di un uomo che suona le campane, alta due metri, è realizzata in ottone dorato. La figura risale a circa il 1400 ed è stata trasferita da vecchio municipio a questa torre della chiesa nel 1617.
Questo automa fu donato alla città dal duca Carlo il Temerario nel XV secolo. Inizialmente fu collocato nel municipio, ma nel 1617 fu trasferito nella torre meridionale della collegiata. Fu in quel periodo che la popolazione cominciò a chiamarlo Jean de Nivelles, dal personaggio francese apparso in canzoni popolari. Nel dialetto di Nivelles era affettuosamente conosciuto come Djan-Djan. La canzone Vive Djan-Djan è l'inno della città.
