1500 anni fa qui c'era una vasta area di distese fangose e saline , ma l'interazione umana con il paesaggio di marea ci ha dato i polder. I canali furono interrati in modo che le saline si trasformassero in saline su cui gli uomini medievali pascolavano le pecore e costruivano fattorie.
