Nell'autunno del 1834, i vecchi edifici del parlamento furono distrutti da un incendio. Il concorso architettonico lanciato successivamente fu vinto da Charles Barry con un design neogotico che soddisfava i gusti di quel tempo. I lavori, che iniziarono nel 1840, avrebbero impiegato 20 anni per essere completati.
