Nel corso del IX secolo i Danesi si erano impadroniti di un vasto territorio nella parte centrale ed orientale dell'Inghilterra, e di lì premevano verso la parte meridionale dell'isola, dove si trovava il regno dei Sassoni occidentali, o Wessex. Una sconfitta subita ad Ashdown per opera del futuro re del Wessex, Alfredo il Grande, aveva solo temporaneamente fermato la loro espansione.
