"De Leuvense Vaartkom" is een schilderij van Louis-Marie Autissier. Het werk van de meest befaamde schilders wordt eeuwenlang geroemd. Maar wat nog spectaculairder is is het werk dat in dit kanaal gestopt werd. De Vaart Leuven-Mechelen werd vanaf 1750 gegraven door 500 Ardense boeren. De mijnbouw had in Wallonië nog geen werk en welzijn gebracht. Werklieden, vrijwel altijd boeren, migreerden tijdelijk naar onteigende woningen in de buurt van het kanaaltraject. Voor een dagloon van ruim 2 frank groeven ze 11 uur per dag de 30 kilometer lange kanaalbedding uit. De enige hulp kwam van schop, kruiwagens, loopplanken en primitieve houten hijstoestellen. Twee jaar is er gewerkt alvorens in 1752 het eerste water in het kanaal kon vloeien.
