Woning van de Gentse geschiedschrijver en factor (= dichter-voorzitter) van de rederijkerskamer Maria T'Heeren, Marcus van Vaernewyck (1518-1569). Zijn bekendste werken zijn de Historie van Belgis (=Vlaanderen) en zijn ooggetuigenverslag van de beeldenstorm in Van de beroerlicke tijden in die Nederlanden en voornamelijk in Ghendt 1566-1568. Op de topgevel staat sinds 1880 zijn borstbeeld, daaronder zijn lijfspreuk "Laet vaeren nydt", gesteund door de staart van twee dolfijnen (symbool van aanzien en strijdvaardigheid). In de 17de eeuw stond het huis bekend als De bonte mantele.
