Nadat André Dumont in As de eerste Limburgse steenkool ontdekte, veranderde het uitzicht van deze regio definitief. De terrils met hun unieke fauna en flora, de imposante mijntorens en oude mijngebouwen... Maar ook de mijncités, gebedshuizen, multiculturele bevolking en mediterraanse restaurants: ze geven mijngemeenten zoals Beringen, Heusden-Zolder en Houthalen-Helchteren vandaag nog altijd een aparte sfeer.
