Bacharach werd in 871 voor het eerst vermeld in een oorkonde. Bacharach dankt haar faam al van oudsher aan de wijnbouw en de wijnhandel. Reeds in de middeleeuwen was deze stad wereldbekend als hoofdplaats voor de wijnopslag aan de Middenrijn, de Nahe en de Rheingau. Ze was een van de bekendste wijnoorden.
