De Carlisle Priorij of abdij werd opgericht in 1122, door Koning Henry I. Het verving een eerder gebouw op dezelfde plaats. Tien jaren later, creëerde hij het bisdom van Carlisle en was de abdijkerk sindsdien een kathedraal. Het gebouw is gebouwd van rood zandsteen. Een grootschalige restauratie werd uitgevoerd tussen 1853 en 1857. Het huidige gebouw heeft een groot deel van zijn oorspronkelijk schip verloren, het werd vernietigd door de Schotten in de 17de eeuw.
