In opdracht van Willem III creëerden George London en Henry Wise in 1690 een doolhof voor het Hampton Court Palace. Datzelfde plan van het doolhof zou gebruikt worden tweehonder jaar later door Psycholoog Willard Small aan de Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, om testen te doen met ratten en hun geheugen. De reden waarom Small dit labyrinth overnam was dat hij op zoek ging in de Encyclopaedia Brittanica naar het woord Labyrinth en daar een plattegrond van het doolhof vond. Hij maakte er wel een rechthoek van terwijl dat van Hampton court de vorm van een trapezium heeft.
