In 1986 werd een wedstrijd uitgeschreven voor een outdoor sculptuur ter gelegenheid van de 200ste verjaardag van de stad Reykjavík. Jón Gunnar's "Zon Voyager" won de wedstrijd, en het aluminium model (42,5 x 88 x 36 cm) werd voorgelegd aan de stad voor de uitvoering. Het full-sized Zon Voyager werd uiteindelijk onthuld op Sæbraut op de verjaardag van de stad Reykjavík, 18 augustus 1990.
Het werk is gemaakt van roestvrij staal en staat op een cirkel van granieten platen, omringd door zogenaamde 'town-hall beton ". Het is gebouwd in overeenstemming met Jón Gunnar's grotere full-scale tekening van Sun Voyager en werd begeleid door Jón Gunnar's assistent, de kunstenaar Kristinn E. Hrafnsson. De techniek van het beeld werd begeleid door de technoloog, Sigurjón Yngvason, in nauwe samenwerking met Jón Gunnar zelf.
