Julius Caesar werd vermoord op 15 maart 44 v.Chr. in de Curia Pompei, het senaatsgebouw dat deel uitmaakte van het Theater van Pompeius in Rome. Hij werd tijdens een vergadering door ongeveer zestig samenzweerders, waaronder Brutus en Cassius, met 23 dolksteken om het leven gebracht, waarvan één fataal was.
