Aan het einde van de dertiende eeuw begon men met de bouw van een uit tufsteen opgetrokken zaalkerkje.Aan de noordzijde was een aanbouw die dienst deed als sacristie. De toren bestond eveneens uit tufsteen.Na 1450 werd de romaanse kerk in laat-gotische stijl met baksteen vergroot tot een pseudobasiliek met twee zijbeuken, gedekt door een houten tongewelf. De vijfenvijftig meter hoge toren werd in 1527 gebouwd, in een stijl die was afgeleid van de Utrechtse Domtoren. Een vrijwel identieke toren is gebouwd in Eemnes-Buiten. In de zeventiende eeuw werd aan de zuidzijde een kapel aangebouwd.
