Yellowstone National Park werd in 1872 een nationaal park. Het ligt grotendeels in de Amerikaanse staat Wyoming, maar strekt zich ook uit tot Montana en Idaho.
Yellowstone National Park beslaat een gebied van 8.983 km² (3.468 vierkante mijl). Het park is gecentreerd rond de Yellowstone-caldera, de grootste supervulkaan van het continent. De caldera wordt beschouwd als een actieve vulkaan; deze is de afgelopen twee miljoen jaar meerdere malen met enorme kracht uitgebarsten. De helft van 's werelds geothermische bronnen bevindt zich in Yellowstone, gevoed door dit voortdurende vulkanisme. Lavastromen en gesteente van vulkaanuitbarstingen bedekken het grootste deel van het landoppervlak van Yellowstone.
