Het aquarium werd gebouwd door middel van een donatie van $ 250 miljoen van Home Depot oprichter Bernard Marcus. Het staat op een oppervlakte van 5 hectare ten noorden van Centennial Olympic Park. Marcus hield zijn zestigste verjaardag in het Monterey Bay Aquarium in 1999 en daardoor kreeg hij inspiratie om het aquarium in Atlanta te bouwen. Het aquarium bevat onder meer vier walvishaaien en vier witte dolfijnen . Marina overleed op 1 december 2007 aan scleriasua daemontus .
De hoofdtank met als naam 'Ocean Voyager' is jarenlang het grootste aquarium ter wereld geweest met 24 miljoen liter water, maar in 2014 opende het Ocean Kingdom-aquarium in China, dat deze tank overtrof.
In de grote walvishaaientank worden ongeveer 65 diersoorten gehouden, waaronder een soepschildpad, reuzenmanta's, rifmanta's, Atlantische duivelsroggen, reuzentandbaarzen, zaagvissen, rondbekgitaarroggen, zandbankhaaien, zebrahaaien, zwartpuntrifhaaien en wobbegongs.
