Little suggests that there was ever a village here. Only the name of the creek (Roeselarekreek) gives a hint to the past. Here was Nieuw-Roeselare, founded in 1241. But it came to an end due to the rising waters of a storm surge in 1374. In the 14th century, the village was granted city rights before its end. The fatal storm surge of 1374 was certainly not the only one in its form at the time. Between 1214 and 1530, more than 45 storm surges were recorded in the North Sea.
