At G. Maczek Square, near the Lakenmarkt, an authentic Sherman tank was erected as a monument in memory of the city's liberation by the First Polish Armored Division under the command of General Stanislaw Maczek in 1944. General Maczek was also immortalized in a bronze creation by Jef Claerhout in Tielt. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Tielt and the region, the statue was unveiled at Poland Square on the day of liberation, September 8, 1994. Various memorial sites still commemorate the eight Polish soldiers who fell in Tielt, who found their final resting place in the Tielt military cemetery.
