High forest

The Hoogbos is a forest on a plateau south of Mheer. Most of the forest lies in Belgium. In the last piece of the Netherlands, you walk among fragrant spruces and old oak trees. At the edge of the forest, mistletoe grows, and you look out over a typical South Limburg landscape: meadows with hawthorn hedges, orchards, and hills.

In the forest, you walk through various hollow ways, often with badger burrows. You can also see some strange pits in the forest, called dolines. This happens because the limestone in the ground dissolves under special conditions, causing the ground to sink.
