Hamme is said to have had the first stone church in these regions. There was already mention of it before the 10th century. Due to the growth of the population, it was decided to completely rebuild and enlarge the old church in 1740. This church, designed in an early classicist style, was created by the Augustinian monk Thomas Laureyns from Dendermonde.
The unusual name Saint Peter's Chains refers to the story of the liberation of the apostle Peter. He had been captured and chained by Herod. According to the story, he was awakened one night by an angel who told him to follow, despite the chains. Miraculously, the chains were broken, and the securely locked prison door opened on its own.
