After the village destruction of 1489, only the 12th-century Romanesque tower remained standing from the church. The people of Overijse did not lose heart and began the reconstruction of the church in Gothic style. In 1692, during a fire, the church was once again engulfed in flames. It was rebuilt again and underwent a final Neo-Gothic restoration in the 19th century. Beneath the choir lies the crypt of the lords of Overijse from the last two hundred years of the Ancien Régime (17th-18th century).
