The Clay Pits

On the left is "De Kleiputten". This nature area of over 4 ha was part of a clay pit that extended further southwest. The clay layers here were relatively shallow for extraction and processing into bricks. The tall chimney is still a testament to this former industrial activity. What remains is a bare, wide, and deep pit with steep walls at different levels: nature could begin its reclamation. The educational and natural historical management of the area is outlined by policymakers and local environmental associations. In recent years, the city government has purchased several plots of land. Trees have been planted on these plots, creating a green corridor with walking paths and a play forest between the Kleiputten and the Sterrebos. This young "urban fringe forest" is freely accessible to walkers.
