Archaeological finds show that Destebergen had been inhabited since 10,000 BC.
Although the height difference here is minimal, the name 'bergen' refers to the sandy higher parts NE of the Scheldt. These differences were enough to qualify as a settlement site. In periods when the Scheldt often overflowed its banks, it was useful to build roads and villages on higher sand ridges.
The second part of the name, "Destel", comes from the Celtic "Thesle", which is a reference (but in Celtic) of the sand hill in the center of the municipality. This is now largely leveled so that you hardly feel anything of it when you ride it by bike.
