Vlasmarkt

The "flax market" is a very specific name that is explained by some authors as the place where flax was traded in the Middle Ages. Anyone who looks around here rightly questions this. It is more likely that the participle "mark" – as in many other cases – refers to a border area. The first part of the word – "flax" – may refer to the border with the Walenland. According to another theory, the term "flax" (and its variations) can also refer to a wetland.

There is indeed no shortage of water here. Although the "Vlasmark" is located high on the watershed between the Senne and the Hene, it forms a kind of bowl where water can flow to the surrounding area. It is therefore not surprising that six streams spring from here.
