Clare De Vos is known as the Witch of Nokere. She was immortalized in Marc De Bel's book: "Nelle, the witch of Cruysem". Nelle was the niece of Aunt Clara.
Clara or Calare De Vos was born around 1576 in Nokere. She grew up in turbulent times. Flanders belongs to the Spanish Empire. There was regular looting, crop failures and other disasters. The depopulation also strikes in Nokere. In 1600 there were only 307 souls. As always, people are looking for causes and explanations for all this calamity. And Clara De Vos was in the spotlight.
In 1634 Clara De Vos was 58 years old and unmarried. She was sued for witchcraft by her two brothers-in-law, who happened to be in debt to her.
