The impressive sculpture The Navigator Monument by Simon Dybbroe Møller is based on the logo of Netscape Navigator. The former search engine lost its leading position on the internet to Microsoft Explorer in the late nineties. He cast the digital ship's helm logo in bronze. Now that it returns to its maritime context, the salty environment will accelerate the patination process and ensure that the ship's helm ultimately turns green, just like the original Netscape logo.
The seaside resort of Westende was designed by the family of Paul Otlet, an internet visionary from the early twentieth century. It is quite fitting that Westende today houses this monument for an earlier internet application.
