Location Start in Ruien
For centuries, the Scheldt has played a leading role in and around the historic city of Oudenaarde. Today, the city is known as the finish line of the Tour of Flanders, but in the 10th century, this area was important and a Margraviate of the German Emperor.
The city is rich in monuments, and the green tapestries (‘verdures’) made here are world-famous. In the 16th century, almost half of the population worked in the carpet industry.
Our bicycle takes us along a loop-shaped route through places that settled in the bends and meanders of the Scheldt centuries ago. We also feel, smell, and hear nature and come face to face with the cultural heritage of this region.
