The core town of Petershagen, i.e. Petershagen without the surrounding villages, lies except for a few houses of the "bridgehead" immediately west of the Weser, at the mouth of the Ösper. Opposite, on the eastern bank, lies Petershagen-Lahde.
Until 31 December 1972, Petershagen was a town in the Amt of Petershagen and the seat of the district administration. On 1 January 1973, it was merged with several municipalities to form the new, much larger town of Petershagen.
