Conquered and then abandoned many times by both sides, the Thiaumont ridge is surmounted by a farm to the east and a structure to the west, built in 1887. Between these 2 points stands today the great Ossuary of Douaumont.
Of the work pulverized by the German artillery, only a few metal rods and scattered concrete blocks remain. On 23 June, a violent German offensive started from this ridge, engulfing the structure under a shell vault.
