The place Place Dauphine is strongly associated with the bestselling Belgian author, Georges Simenon. He was not only famous for his books but also for his love life. He claimed that he had slept with ten thousand women. His later wife estimated it at about a thousand.
Here, his main character, police commissioner Maigret, had his favorite café and pondered many crimes. This is symbolically well chosen because, in reality, it is also the heart of law enforcement, with the courthouse and the police headquarters nearby.
