De plek Place Dauphine is sterk verbonden met de best verkopende Belgische schrijver, Georges Simenon. Hij was niet alleen beroemd om zijn boeken maar ook om zijn liefdesleven. Hijzelf beweerde dat hij met tienduizend vrouwen naar bed was geweest. Zijn latere echtgenote hield het op een duizendtal.
Hier had zijn hoofdpersonage politiecommissaris Maigret zijn stamcafé en overpeinsde menige misdaad. Dat is symbolisch goed gekozen want hier is ook in de realiteit het hart van de misdaadbestrijding met vlakbij het justitiepaleis en de prefectuur van de politie.
