Ramparts of Bergues

Bergues is a small fortified town: the ramparts, which are more than 5 km long, partly date back to the Middle Ages or were built according to Vauban's plans.

Almost all of Bergues' fortifications have been preserved. It is also fortunate in that it bears witness to many different periods of construction . The northern curtain wall and the Guy de Dampierre tower (1286) date from the time of the Counts of Flanders. The Dukes of Burgundy left us mainly the Nekerstor, the Porte de Bierne and the curtain wall along the Rue Pierre DECROO (1418). During the Spanish period, a new type of bastioned, dug-in fortifications emerged. This was the western front between the Cassel gate and the Bierne gate (1585).

In 2014, the 'sentier de la couronne Saint-winoc' path was inaugurated, a path that partly runs along the ramparts.
