Cliffs of Moher - Clare

The Cliffs of Moher (Irish: Aillte an Mhothair), located in County Clare in Ireland, are among the highest cliff coasts in Europe. The cliffs consist of limestone and extend over a length of eight kilometres on ireland's west coast, between the villages of Doolin and Liscannor. The cliffs border the Burren.

The cliffs rise 120 meters from the Atlantic Ocean at Hag's Head. The highest point is at 214 m. Halfway up is O'Brien's Tower, a round stone watchtower, which was built in 1835 by Cornelius O'Brien. He did this for the benefit of the many tourists who already visited the cliffs. Today, the cliffs are among the most visited places in Ireland.

From O'Brien's Tower you can clearly see the Aran Islands in Galway Bay and the Twelve Bens in County Galway in clear weather.

The cliffs are a good example of erosion by the sea. One can count the sedimentary layers and there are thousands of years of geology ready like an open book. The cliffs are a natural monument of Ireland. Source: wikipedia
