Doetinchem (Low Saxon: both Deutekem and Durkum or Dörkum) is a city and municipality on the Oude IJssel, located in the Achterhoek, in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The municipality has 56,100 inhabitants (April 1, 2011, source: CBS) and covers an area of 79.07 km2 (of which 0.57 km2 is water). Thus, Doetinchem is the most densely populated municipality in the Achterhoek. The population is over forty percent of Protestant affiliation and nearly equally of Catholic background.
