Doetinchem is a city and municipality on the Oude IJssel, located in the Achterhoek, in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The municipality has 56,134 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2008, source: CBS) and covers an area of 52.74 km2 (of which 1.50 km2 is water). Thus, Doetinchem is the most densely populated municipality in the Achterhoek. The population is over forty percent of Protestant background and almost equally from Catholic heritage. The rest of the municipality nowadays consists of many atheists and Muslims.
